Cats, said Kipling in the Just So Stories, are free spirits. They retain their personal distance and independence despite both thousands of years of domestication and deep affection for their human friends. You can keep a cat but you can never own it body and soul. Perhaps this was why Shiho loved cats so. For independence of spirit was surely one of her strongest characteristics-one of her greatest charms.

I went to Shiho for advice many times on many subjects, first at the Library of Congress in the 1930s, then in Tokyo in 1947 and after, and still later at her charming home in Oiso. The advice she gave was her own. It was always independent, never second-hand. She represented only Shiho Sakanishi and took pride in the quality of what she said. I did not always act on her advice. It might have been better had I done so. But I depended heavily on it, particularly in the fellowship program for Japanese writers. Shiho’s advice was always thoughtful, wise, compassionate and fair. She was impartial as was compatible with her devotion to democracy, good international relations and the cultural development of both Japan and the United States. In the many times I talked with her I never detected a trace of self-interest in the advice she gave.

Such advisers are very rare. Those I knew around the world during my Rockefeller Foundation days I can count on the fingers of one hand. They are national treasures.

From A Free Spirit by Charles B. Fahs
